Coming soon: Show and Tell Halloween Special

When: 12:30–1:30pm on Tuesday 31st October
Where: The Mess (kitchen)
Hosts: Caroline and Tom

The best way to find out interesting things your fellow Skiff members have been doing, this time with a spooky twist… For Show and Tell this month we’re after your freelancing horror stories, nightmare clients, projects from hell, things that will put a shiver up anyone’s spine. We’re not going to be strict though. Have something else to share? We’re all ears and eyes!

(Also check out the Skiff podcast, more info below.)

Caroline’s report from the last Show and Tell

Jo Harrison started by showing a film she’s been working on with Joyce for Scottish Womens Aid. She also showed us the branding she created for a recent conference in Copenhagen where she also ran a Doodle Club!

I (Caroline Beavon) talked about Brighton Art Battle, which I’m taking part in on 7 October. 12 artists are given 20 minutes to live paint with the audience voting for the winner.

Graham Lally showed us DRPFD (dripfeed) his slow social media tool. Photos are emailed into the app, buffered and posted once a day. He built it as an antidote to the fast social media apps like Instagram and TikTok.

Harry Winter introduced himself and showed us some of his recent work including a snack pack promoting good dental habits for kids, and data dashboard and design work for the train industry.

Stuart Wallace showed us an ongoing series of illustrations he’s posting to Instagram. It’s already attracted interest from some potential illustration clients.

Skiffmate event: People, Planet, Pint

Kelly has her first People, Planet, Pint sustainability meetup coming next week — Thursday 26th October from 6pm in the Old Albion in Hove.

Pop down to your local People Planet Pint meetup to find more about what’s going on locally with sustainability and how you can get involved.

No pitches, powerpoints or panels. Just People, Planet, Pint/s.

Your local meetup is a great place to start your journey or continue learning, and meet diverse people to chat about life and how we can sustain it. Every job is a climate job, so come along and learn about how you can take action, as well as what is going on locally.

We welcome everyone, regardless of their experience or background. People Planet Pint is a space where everyone can feel comfortable learning about sustainability and sharing their ideas.

A little extra space to call your own: lockers

Want to leave some stuff at The Skiff between visits? We have lockers for just that.

The capacious wooden lockers are big enough for a monitor and peripherals (or small child, should you need to store one while you work.) The yellow ones are great for keyboards, snacks, and random bits and bobs you want to be sure will be here when you’re in.

If you have an older 1st or 2nd Mate membership, a locker is included in what you’re paying (1st get a larger wooden locker, 2nd a standard yellow one.) For everyone else it’s £10+VAT (yellow) or £15+VAT (wooden) per month on top of your membership.

Please let Tom Parslow know if you need one, he’s @tom on Slack.

Listen to interesting folk who share The Skiff with you with the Skiff podcast

Caroline has interviewed more Skiff members and you can hear their stories on our podcast, Tales from the Engine Room. It’s a great way to find out the interests and a history of someone you could be sitting next to next time you’re in.

Big thanks to Caroline for all the effort she’s putting into the podcast, and all the other ways she’s helping The Skiff.
