It’s Board Games heaven next week, and a write up of the eight talks from Show & Tell this week

Next week: Board Games Night

When: 7pm onwards on Friday 31st March
Where: The Engine Room

Chris H is running his regular board games night next Friday (31st March). Here’s what he has to say about it…

It would be great to get some new faces along to Games Night, there’s a whole host of super easy but fun games if you’re new, and it’s a great way to meet other Skiff mates!

We have a cool selection of games and people to explain how they work, co-op games, social deduction games, drink friendly party games, all the games!

Feel free to bring along some drink or a friend, and any games you have that you want to try and teach to people :)

If you haven’t been along before or don’t really play games but are keen for a social, then you’ll have a great evening. The games range from 3 players up to 10+ and are all super easy to learn :)

We’ll kick off at 7 but feel free to come along later, people tend to filter in and slowly join in.

See you then!

Shown and Told

Show & Tell on Wednesday was great! 24 people came along and saw eight talks by different Skiff members. Here’s a tiny bit about each talk:

Becky Miller works as a Service Designer at Defra. She’s a multi-disciplinary designer using design to help explain what Defra can do for various groups, often those in agriculture. She showed us some of her work, and explained some of her process and what it’s like working for a government department. As a freelancer, this was an interesting look into how one person in a huge organisation does their work.

Stuart Wallace is a freelancer making healthcare apps and creates games on the side. He showed us a 3D flying game that he’s started working on and had an impressive looking demo that apparently only took two days to make (plus ten years experience!) He talked about where he wants to take the game and how balancing work on games vs client work is difficult.

James Turner showed us the latest version of his app OrderWhizz. Previously it was used for ordering food and drinks at events, now he has updated it for wider use and it is being used for various swimming events. Along with a quick demo, he talked about how he is trying to market the app more widely to get more customers.

Chetan Padia showed us some of the work he’s done for Clockwork Dog. They provide hardware and software for companies building immersive experiences. They began with escape rooms and Chetan showed us a recent escape room they’ve been working on, and some of the large experiences they help provide, including Monopoly Lifesized.

On the left Stuart demonstrates his game on a large TV. On the right, Chetan shows us some of the work Clockwork Dog has done on the large TV.

Joyce Lo is a motion graphics designer who has worked on documentaries and is moving to journalism. She has been working on various small stories and showed us a short animated film she made recently, explaining the shortages of eggs and tomatoes in the UK. Joyce has real talent, we all understood the film even though it was in Cantonese, it’ll be great to see what she makes next.

Ben Edwards has been a web developer for 29 years. He showed us the first website he worked on in December 1994 and talked us through what brought about its existence and kick started his career on the web. This was a five minute nostalgia-fest for me as I’ve been making websites for almost as long and any mentions of NCSA Mosaic and Hotmetal editor get me right in the feels.

On the left, Joyce shows us her latest animated film. On the right, Ben shows us his first website from the early days of the web.

Alice Dewar-Mills is an experienced commercial director and has recently set up business offering this on a part time basis to small, growing companies who don’t need a full time commercial director yet. She will make sure your company is commercially viable, help with budgets, pricing, contracts and much more.

Jo Harrison is a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. She gave us a whistlestop tour of her recent work, predominantly for non-profits and support organisations in Scotland. She’s worked on many difficult and sensitive subjects, e.g. for Rape Crisis Scotland, and has to make websites and material as welcoming and approachable as possible. She’s also worked on visual summaries for conference talks, and running doodling workshops. If all that wasn’t enough, she’s also learning how to animate.

Jo gave us a cram packed end to a cram packed Show & Tell. Thanks very much to all the speakers, and especially to Caroline B and Tom P for organising. I can’t believe they got all of this into a one hour lunchtime!

Show & Tell will return on Wednesday 19th April.

On the left, Alice stands, describing her new company and offering. On the right, Jo stands and talks about the design work she’s showing on a large TV.
